Experts in Hemochromatosis
Welcome to HemoGAD Technologies, a start-up company in the field of medical device research for the management of Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH), Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA) and other iron overload and deficiency conditions, e.g. Sickle Cell Anaemia.
Hereditary Hemochromatosis is the most prevalent hereditary genetic disease in Northern Europe, the US and Australia, affecting more than 5 million people. HH is also known as The Celtic Curse, as upto 1 in 5 people of Celtic origin carry at least one faulty gene!
Patients have to be monitored for life, which currently requires clinician involvement for frequent blood tests. We are developing a home test that is non-invasive and enables patients to monitor their condition at home – just as diabetes patients can now.
We have world-wide Intellectual Property (IP) applications pending, giving us exclusive rights to market our technology.
GEORGE DONNELLY, CEO – BECOME A BLOOD DONER?
Some time ago, I started researching a home test to monitor Serum Ferritin (SF) in order to both reduce the load on an over-stretched NHS and to save everyone with HH and IDA both their personal time and the number of times that we have to be ‘stabbed’ with a needle.
Once in maintenance, I decided that I should, as often as possible, use the Blood Transfusion Service for my phlebotomies. This has the dual benefit of increasing blood supplies to use in the NHS and saves the NHS money, as they have to safely dispose of blood from therapeutic phlebotomies, which has a cost to the NHS.
- We are aware that the rules vary in different countries, even in different states. Fortunately, in the UK the Blood Transfusion Service will accept blood from HH donors.
